"Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain."
Kahlil Gibran
I was recently practicing the fundamentals and noticed that while performing Ju, your essentially snapping a strike out at an incoming attack, for that particular strike I use the hammer fist for two reasons, the first reason is the hammer fist at least for me, strikes much harder than nearly any other strike with the exception of kicks. The second reason is that even if when you bring that initial strike out to deflect an incoming attack and you connect using your forearm, you can still drag that hammer fist down for a second nearly simultaneous strike.
I don’t know how feasible it is to actually shift from a hammer fist to a trapping hand technique, and that’s what I truly wanted to ask about. As an example, say when the strike comes in and I step forward with my left leg, deliver the strike against the incoming strike,
would it be feasible for me to open my hammer fist up and capture the extended arm of the attacker? It would seem to me that with the arm trapped, I could step in again with my right leg leading, deliver the palm strike to the ribcage while pulling down on the trapped arm, and depending on where I’ve planted my right foot, hook an ankle and send the opponent over and to the ground.
Once again, is it feasible to attempt a hammer fist and then use that hammer fist as an trapping hand?
Thank you, Masters, for putting up these Dojochat recaps. Help me catch up if I can’t make the original cast. Don’t know if you can do it, but we can rarely see your stance or lower body work during the chats. Would there be any way to reposition cameras to include that in future casts? Take care!
