Thank you Masters Biernacki and Thompson,

It occurred to me while watching the chair exercise that if the chair is moveable (and I should probably try it before asking about it), how about tucking your chin to free your airway, grab the front edge of the chair seat and pull it from under you. While sitting in the chair you’re already in a somewhat iron horse stance and once you get the chair out of the way you could operate from there. While pulling the chair between your legs the back of the chair might serve to straighten your attackers knees and possibly make him or her loosen the choke hold grip, allowing you to turn into them. Maybe smack em’ with the chair. A lot would depend I guess on the type of chair - armchair, folding, etc.. I did find out that if grabbed from behind like that it’s tough to tuck your chin without first reaching up and giving the attacker’s arm a tug to loosen their grip slightly.

Thank you both again for your thought provoking examples.

The “arm from behind around the neck” attack is always a tough one for me because it brings back unpleasant memories. How do you defend yourself when you’re actually dangling in the air, feet off the ground? You don’t have the benefit of a chair to back into your opponent. Can you get good kicks in without touching the ground?

    Master Thompson and DM Biernaki,

I enjoyed the scenario. I think I mentioned to you Master Thompson, I was thinking about the cubicle scenario where your back faces the opening. I did not think about the Sanchin Dance. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Kim, The first thing that came to me was to reach up and back and clasp your hands around your attackers neck. This will first of all help to protect your neck and spine. This may also help your breathing. Then bring your knees to your chest and thrust down to the ground. Repeat as needed. Make sure you find some one you completely trust to work on this with. This is a dangerous situation. Play this thru your mind to see how your weight and leverage can help you. Good luck!

Thank you District Master Biernacki and Master Thompson for addressing my question. I did not even think about the dance, now I have more to work with :)
