In part three of the Back to Basics Series we’re looking at Basic San, the upper cut. Often times I see sanchinkas using Basic San like they use Basic Ichi. This workout shows how unique Basic San is and reveals a simple way to make it even better.

Awesome! Thank you Chief Instructor Dearman! I’ve really been working on getting the upward movement with Basic San, and this video will certainly help.
Sensei Jonathon McClain
Chief Instructor Master Joe, that was one of the best videos yet! I’ve been trying to refine my basic strikes (rebuild them, make them stronger, faster, better -turn them into the bionic basics). These tips on san will be invaluable. Please follow-up with shi(and the rest in all your spare time
Sensei McClain,
I’m glad to hear that you are thinking along these lines. We’re synchronized!
Hi Marge,
Big thanks for the kind remarks! I will definitely cover Basic Shi. It’s another tricky one and can’t wait to share some “ground breaking” things with you!
Chief Instructor Dearman it was refreshing to see and discuss strike extension and how the angle of force or lift changes. I have always felt it there but mostly have seen San with less angle. Thanks for the new outlook!
Cheif Instructor Dearman,
Thank you for taking the time in these videos. They really are a great tool. I have been working on using stance more in all my strikes. During the flurry in this video, it seems that you set your stance a little lower when striking closer. Could you explain this please.
Chief Instructor Dearman,
In my class tonight, we worked several basics using a ball hanging from a string as our target. You could really get a sense of the difference in energy direction between ichi and san from the motion of the ball.
RE Tina
Thank you! Good eye, I am deepening my stance. By doing this I’m able to compensate for the lack of extension to get more power. Great question!
RE Mark CD
Great to hear, anything to create a clear reason for any given technique will get you a clear edge. Thanks for the insight!
Very insightful. It’s still amazing how much there is to learn about the basics and make them new again.
Great exercise, although I have to admit, I could feel my technique slipping from San at full, mid and short distances to something along the lines of San at full, Shi at mid, and Shi at short. What started out as a simple exercise turned into a barrage of feasible combinations for me heh.
San, Hachi, go
San Shi, rake
San, San, Hachi
I just went nuts on the bag after a few minutes of the original exercise, it just all seemed to click and come together.
i just joined and i would state this has been the most useful video for a beginner such as myself .great job
Thank you, I’m glad you found it useful! More of this series is in the works, so stay tuned!
