How often have you practiced in less-than-ideal circumstances? No, I don’t mean a dirty cafeteria or gym! I’m talking about things that get in-the-way, obstacles. In this video Master Chris Yonker, New Hampshire District Master, shares an exercise that will improve stance and full-body focus in many ways. Especially on uneven ground!

Wisdom
Through repetition we remember the technique and movement. Through study we find in our self the ability to stay focused on what it is we are trying to accomplish, regardless of what the situation throws in our way.

What’s fun(?) is to work out on a hill and see how warped your stances get…and how much you try to overcompensate with a larger step when going uphill and a shorter step going downhill. Any thoughts on overcompensating your step vs. just letting your foot land where it may?
Thankyou, this also gives me ideas for the summer classes. It seems like Sensei Matt Gauthier and I did something like this in class once. Thanks!
Master Yonker,
Too cool! Our Sensei is a big fan of working out on hills and 4×4’s during the summer sessions, this fits perfectly! Anxious to try! Swapping feet on top without perching will be a real challenge
Thanks for the excercise.

rmdewey: souns like tou are trying to control momentum.
Its true gravity plays part when working up or down a hill. Its important to learn control so that gravity does not alter our technique without our permission.
The best answer is practice, practice, practice using all forms to study how each stance and transition is effected.

Neat idea! I remember a while back when we went outside to the playground at the school during a summer session…we used picnic tables and even attempted basics standing on a swing! I like your idea of a curb though, seems much more “do-able”…and falling off the swing started to hurt LOL
