Here’s a twist on an old workhorse of an exercise, the Fingertip Push-up. Strengthening the wrist and individual digits on our hand is very important, especially considering the wrist will be more likely to “bottleneck” on contact, than any other part of your punch. Alternatives to the standard push-up are also shown here.

Thank you for showing proper technique as well as a way to modify them. I struggle with push ups and this way I can work on strengthening my fists/wrists separately from my push ups.
I hope this doens’t sound dumb and vain…Is there a difference in benifit between using fingertips vs. the very tips? I’m wondering because the very tips always hurt more - my nails…I like having nails and if I do the very tips they just bend (which hurts) & sometimes break
so I shy from doing those. But…if there is different benifit then I probably should start keeping them shorter.
Chief Instructor Master Dearman,
Thank you for more outstanding workout info! Regarding the fingertip pushup - is it a better tool for overall fist strengthening/tightening/alignment than pushups done on knuckles?
Answer to Amy Lynn’s question: Actually your nails can be your friends, don’t cut them short! Slashing, spearing and gouging, all great ways to use those pretty little weapons :). You don’t always need body weight to tone the muscles in the wrist and hand. To avoid breaking your nails, stay away from finger-tip–tips and try forming a good shuto hand, tightening for a period of time until you feel fatigue. Do this several times consistently and you will see some good results! Great question!
Answer to Marge Wynn’s question: Thank you for the feed back! Working the knuckles for a push-up is definitely more effective for strengthening the wrist, especially for any first-two knuckle strikes. I see the knuckle push-up misperceived often as more of the outside of the fingers and less knuckles though. The FIRST TWO KNUCKLES will benefit much more effectively. Although, it is much more challenging as well! Look forward to a video addressing this in the future!
Chief Instructor Dearman, I am guessing that knuckle push-ups can also be done on the wall to modify. What is the benefit of push-ups done on the shutos? I sprained my wrist in January and it still talks to me, I am hoping I can find something to build strength in my wrists that may help me with the sore area so it will heal and I can keep from aggravating it.

[…] Video Exercise: The Finger-Tip Push-Up […]
I have learned a lot with this workout. Now my fist won’t be as loose as it was in the past. Thank you.
What great input on helping strengthening my fists. I really liked the excercise with the wall fingertip push-up.
Thank you Master Joe,
I also like the wall excercise.I was exploring the possibilities and wondered what your thoughts are on doing both sides at the same time as you would with floor push ups? Thanks again,
Gail Davis
a most excellent conditioner. would love to see more conditioning exercises.
i never new how the hand and fist is us.
