How to Counter a “Sucker” Punch using Sanchin-Ryu Karate Forms

Introducing a new step-by-step photo and video format! Today we’re going to answer a question from our intern Tony: “What options do I have to counter a single hand grab from behind?”. First, let’s take a couple steps back. Why someone would attack us in this way? The motive seems pretty clear, the grab is designed to pull you around (90 to 180 degrees), catch you off-guard and sucker punch you, usually on the face. If the attacker simply wanted to hurt you (ie; for your possessions or to stop you from helping your friend in an assault), couldn’t he do much more damage by simply tackling or by securing a debilitating hold? It think so, that’s why we refer to this as an “ego driven” attack and it’s not that uncommon when a bruised ego is the motivator.
